Silliman Institute. Silliman University was founded on August 28, 1901 as Silliman Institute. It was an elementary school for boys founded by Protestant missionaries Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard and Laura Crooks Hibbard under the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America. Operations started through a gift donation from a businessman and a Christian philanthropist of Cohoes, New York, Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman (where Silliman University got its name).

St. Paul University Manila (SPU Manila) is one of the educational institutions owned and administered by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres (SPC).
The University started out originally in 1911 as a Novitiate, a training center for young Filipino women wishing to become Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres, on a swampy piece of land in Malate. The next year, 1912, the school ,first named St. Paul Institution, started with a kindergarten class upon the request of families in the neighborhood. The elementary started in 1913, the high school in 1924, and the college department in 1936. In 1940, the school's name was changed to St. Paul College of Manila.

In 1932, 13 years after its founding, the PWC was granted government recognition as a university. Between the years 1933-1938, the PWU actively pioneered several projects. The Department of Child Development was opened, and in 1938, a course in Social Civic training was incorporated in the curriculum of the collegiate department. This was in line with the PWU's objective to train Filipino girls in civic responsibility.
